Learning Support Teacher


SUMMARY

  1. The Learning Support Teacher (LST) supports their school with the children with unique learning abilities. The areas of support are admissions counseling, instructional support in and out of the school’s learning center, professional development, and communication with the Learning Support Coordinator (LSC). The Learning Support Teacher operates under the QSI school that they are placed in and responds to requests by the school’s directors, directors of instruction, or school counselors seeking guidance and staff support. The Learning Support Teacher may be asked to communicate and work in tandem with the LSC to better support their students with more severe needs.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Special Education.
  • Experience teaching students with a broad range of special education needs and/or managing special education programs and teachers in a school setting.
    • Experience could include specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.
    • Should have experience in a school setting using inclusion and/or resource room models.
    • QSI or international school experience would be helpful but not mandatory.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Admission/Enrollment/Placement Responsibilities

  1. Evaluate IEP or IEP-similar plans received by their QSI school to determine if the school can provide services to the child.
  2. Identify possible learning accommodations for a new student in their QSI school.
  3. Forward the IEP, IEP-similar plan, or official diagnosis to the Regional Learning Support Coordinator so a QSI Evaluation and Recommendations Summary can be developed. The Regional Learning Support Coordinator will only develop an Evaluation and Recommendations Summary for those with an official diagnosis and evaluation. It will summarize the student’s background information, learning or emotional concerns, evaluation results, and recommendations from the educational psychologist.
  4. Recommend placements in core subject areas which will maximize the academic success of the students.


Instructional Responsibilities

  1. Identify skill building concepts and goals based on data, observations, and narratives to assist in working with students needing additional learning support.
  2. Plan and teach according to the individual student’s Learning Support Plan.
  3. Develop materials and research strategies or resources to support lessons.
  4. Teach through appropriate small group pull-out and/or inclusion models.
  5. Through the Learning Support Plan, the LST will monitor each student’s progress, marking progress results per quintile.
  6. Adjust goals, level of accommodations and supports as needed per the student’s monitored progress, or lack thereof.
  7. Implement formative assessments, such as Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark System, minimum of two a quintile, to maintain data to determine continued course of action.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The LST will liaise with the Regional Learning Support Coordinator. The LST will also be available for a variety of duties, projects and responsibilities consistent with the position as designated but which may not be covered specifically by the above items.
